Plettenberg Bay is a seaside town on South Africa's Garden Route in the Western Cape province, affectionately known as "Plett". The town is renowned for its six Blue Flag beaches and there's a beach for every need: family-friendly to more exuberant surf spots.
The sand Central Beach and Lookout Beach are wonderful for long walks and both have surf breaks. To the south, Robert Nature Reserve is a rocky peninsula with well-known trails popular with all levels of hiker.
Plett town offers wonderful boutiques, delis, restaurants and coffee shops. Several of the suburbs are on the side of hills giving magnificent sea views. An enormous variety of homes abound in the area, from multi-million rand mansions to more accessible starter homes and holiday apartments.
Q: When touring Plettenberg Bay, what are the sort of homes one would expect to encounter?
A: Plett caters for everyone: there are homes that have been passed down through the family for a number of generations and retain the laid back "beach cottage look" all the way through to cutting edge modern architecture or even rustic, rural charm.
Q: Let's explore prices, what are the trends? (speak to areas and property size)
A: Property prices range from entry-level apartments at just under R1 million to multi-hectare farms and homes of almost R70 million. We are currently finding homes between R2.5m and R3.5m in great demand, as are apartments under R2m.
Q: What features distinguish Plettenberg Bay within the Garden Route?
A: From our numerous blue flag beaches to beautiful hikes, boating, fishing, golf, surfing, wine farms and superb restaurants! Plett also offers a REAL sense of community that is proud and cares about the town and its people. You can even donate to "keep Plett clean" which employs locals to keep our town looking pristine. School children do it as part of their community service and many locals pitch in just to help.
Q: What makes this area great for young families? Are there any good schools in the nearby vicinity?
A: Raising children in this environment keeps them in constant contact with the outdoors. Being a small town also brings them closer to all walks of life and fosters a greater sense of acceptance of others from all walks of life.
Greenwood Bay College is a private school catering for children from pre-primary to matric, offering the Cambridge curriculum. Plett Primary School is a fantastic government school catering for pre-primary to grade 7. Wittedrift High caters for grade 8 to matric and has boarding facilities. Numerous pre-schools are available as well as a Waldorf offering for up to Grade 7 on the outskirts of Plett.
Q: In terms of lifestyle, what does Plettenberg Bay and its surroundings offer residents?
A: Plett is all about lifestyle. You can take your foot off the accelerator here and still be productive at work. The pressure of traffic jams or long drives to get to the shops doesn't exist. That time wasted in the traffic can now be used for a walk on the beach or through the forest. A surf at Lookout or a swim on Robberg. A catch up with a friend or more time with your family.
Q: What are the nearby healthcare facilities like?
A: There is a Mediclinic hospital with a number of resident specialist surgeons in Plett. Multiple allied services, for example, physio, podiatry, and psychology are readily available within the town.
Q: What are some of the highlights of living here?
A: The biggest highlight is undoubtedly the sheer beauty of this area. One seldom drives more than two minutes without seeing one of the Plett's stunning views. Another BIG plus is everything is so close and there is no traffic: apart from the two highly anticipated weeks over the Christmas holidays.
Q: What advice would you give to people looking to purchase property in Plettenberg Bay and its surroundings?
A: If taking a bond, confirm with your bank how much they will grant you. This saves all parties time but most importantly saves the purchaser the disappointment of not getting the bond for the home they set their heart on.
Q: What effect has Covid had on people living and buying property here?
A: Covid has jet-propelled sales in Plett as people are no longer confined to the office in the city and grab the opportunity to live a less stressful life in a beautiful environment.
Q: What are your favourite aspects of Plett, personally?
A: There are so many that it's difficult to only mention a few. I love the view of the lagoon and the mountains. I love coming down the hill from the Crags and seeing Plett laid out in front of me all the way to Robberg.
I love that I can walk my dogs on the beach. I love that I don't have an electric fence. And of course, I love that the beach is only a three-minute drive from my front door before I can sink my feet into the soft white beach sand.
