2023's Rugby World Cup has been more than an exciting occasion with an abundance of nail-biting moments. With the Springboks now securely within reach of the Webb Ellis trophy after one of the closest games of the tournament against host nation France, we are poised to be the first nation to hoist the cup for a fourth time if all goes according to plan.

As passionate South African rugby fans, we're riding a wave of optimism as the Rugby World Cup 2023 advances to the semi-finals. The Springboks have shown incredible form and spirit throughout the tournament and are now on their final push to set a new precedent in rugby.

A Historic Rivalry and Unpredictable Semi-Final Showdown

This weekend's semi-finals will see us clash once again with England. Our teams know each other well and have been playing each other in Test rugby since 1906 through 45 matches. South Africa leads the series by 27 wins to 16, with two matches drawn. Included in SA wins are the 2007 and 2019 RWC finals.

However, the beauty of the sport lies in its unpredictability, as illustrated by Ireland's early departure from the tournament. England remains the only undefeated team in the 2023 World Cup, and our comparative stats regarding tries scored and points conceded place England and South Africa on par. Even Rassie Erasmus is predicting a 'very tough test' ahead.

Unforeseen Influences and a High-Stakes Clash

Speaking of surprises, it's fascinating to see the growing influence of the Rugby World Cup in unexpected corners. Even university statistics departments and AI teams have joined the excitement, attempting to predict and match outcomes with incredibly advanced models. This blend of traditional enthusiasm and modern technology creates an additional intrigue surrounding the tournament.

The University of Auckland's Statistics Department has correctly predicted the results of 36 of the 44 games played in the tournament, boasting an impressive success rate of 81.8%. Their model predicts another win for our boys in green this Saturday, with a margin of over 10 points.

While we are all hopeful that this weekend's match will see us blazing towards the finals, let's not forget that England is just as motivated to knock us out. This match promises to be an intense encounter, where the unpredictability of the sport is simply part of the charm.

Here's to hoping this match marks the beginning of our historic climb to the apex of rugby legends and a reminder that surprises make the sport genuinely magical. Go, Bokke!
