Category News

Hamilton's Property Practitioners often deal with clients from abroad keenly interested in investing in property throughout South Africa. Through speaking to them, we gain a deeper understanding of what aspects of South Africa attract them and why we should never take them for granted.

South Africa has diverse cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and resilient individuals. In the spirit of gratitude, we take a moment to appreciate the six remarkable aspects that stand out the most to foreign investors and how this should make us proud to call South Africa our home.

The people of Mzanzi

As South Africans, we are fortunate to be surrounded by some of the warmest, most humble, and courageous individuals on the planet. Our people's kindness, resilience, and ability to embrace diversity are truly remarkable.

The warmth of the locals is consistently highlighted as a delightful aspect of living here, with strangers often initiating friendly conversations in shops or restaurants, fostering a sense of belonging within the community. Similar feedback echoes the friendliness of Joburgers, emphasising the welcoming atmosphere that contributes to the overall charm of the region.

The extraordinary conversations, shared laughter, and genuine smiles that grace our daily lives are a testament to the strength of our nation. It is our people who embody the true spirit of South Africa, making it a place like no other.

Our extraordinary landscapes

There was an advert played, perhaps a decade ago, which showcased incredible footage of scenic vistas labelled as countries around the world. Once all the images were shown, the footage was again played with the correct label, this time featuring places within South Africa. It was an unforgettable showcase of just how beautiful our country is.

The nation's splendour stands out as a significant attraction for international buyers, and this sentiment holds even in Jozi, where our urban forest adds to the appeal. Additionally, the temperate climate further entices those considering immigration to the area.

The golden beaches along our coastline, the Garden Route's dense forests, and the Northern Cape's otherworldly deserts are but a few examples of the diverse landscapes that grace our land. We are blessed with a nation that offers a breathtaking view no matter where we look.

Based in the Garden Route, Simon Harris brings a wealth of experience dealing with various nationalities. His clientele has included Americans, Germans, British, Dutch Nationals, and Italians. Particularly noteworthy is the prevalence of British and European buyers in the Knysna property market.

Foreign investors often draw comparisons between Knysna and the picturesque landscapes of the Lake District on the M6 between Lancaster and Carlisle in the UK or Lake Como just north of Milan, Italy. Simon notes that Knysna's universal charm transcends borders, making it an appealing destination for diverse international clients.

South Africa's landscapes are nothing short of extraordinary. From the vast savannahs of the Kruger National Park to the towering Drakensberg Mountains, our country boasts a natural beauty that takes one's breath away.

A rich and diverse culture

South Africa is a vibrant tapestry of cultures, religions, and beliefs. This colourful and diverse blend of backgrounds and traditions creates a rich cultural heritage that is both fascinating and beautiful.

From the energetic rhythms of African dance to the vibrant celebrations of various festivals and pride in our many different backgrounds, our culture is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be explored. The unity in our diversity is a source of pride for every South African, showing the world the true meaning of harmony and what a Rainbow Nation can truly be.

Exceptional weather and stable climate

One of the many privileges of living in South Africa is the exceptional weather and stable climate. Our country enjoys abundant sunshine and mild temperatures, especially during the glorious summer months.

From the hot, humid days punctuated by the Highveld's exhilarating afternoon thunderstorms to the cool, temperate breezes that grace other areas, there's a perfect balance to be found. Johannesburg, with its dynamic urban pulse, experiences a mild climate that keeps the city buzzing year-round. Within the Garden Route, the warm weather complements the lush landscapes, creating an inviting atmosphere for those exploring its natural beauty. The Eastern Cape offers a temperate climate that enhances the charm of its coastal and inland treasures.

Venture into the Winelands, and you'll find a climate that lends itself to cultivating world-class grapes producing some of the finest wines. Meanwhile, Cape Town boasts a Mediterranean climate, making it a haven for those who love to bask in the sun on pristine beaches.

Our rich culinary heritage

South Africa's culinary heritage is a delightful journey of taste sensations. Fusing flavours from different cultural backgrounds has created a unique and delectable cuisine. Whether you savour a hearty bobotie, indulge in scrumptious boerewors rolls, or relish a fragrant and spicy bunny chow, South African dishes are a true gastronomic adventure.

International Investors note the superior quality of South African meat and vegetables adds a delectable dimension to daily living, making the culinary experience an added advantage for those considering a move.

The comparative cost-effective nature of dining out and the accessibility of reasonably priced alcohol contribute significantly to the overall affordability and enjoyment of social experiences in South Africa.

The Springboks - Number one in the world

The South African national rugby team, the Springboks, hold a very special place in the hearts of every South African. Their triumphant moments, especially their victory during the 2023 Rugby World Cup, continue to unite the nation and bring immense pride.

The Springboks are more than just a sports team; they symbolise our resilience, determination, and ability to unite as a nation. This year, the Springboks brought home the Webb Ellis Cup for the fourth time, making us the number-one rugby team in the world and the only ones to achieve such a feat. Their achievements on the field mirror the resilience and strength of our people off the field.

Other Driving Factors According to International Investors

Several factors uniquely contribute to the appeal of South Africa as a preferred destination:

  • Strength of Currency Exchange

The favourable exchange rates, with foreign currencies often holding a robust position against the local currency, empower individuals to enjoy a heightened standard of living in South Africa, often surpassing that of their home countries.

  • Quality of Life

South Africa offers the prospect of a very high standard of living. This elevated quality of life is comparable and frequently exceeds the standards found in the home countries of many residents.

  • Concerns About Home Countries

Many Europeans express disillusionment with their home countries, citing rising crime rates, economic challenges, and disagreements with government policies as compelling reasons to seek a new home in South Africa. This emphasises that we are not the only ones with such concerns, and some perceive us as better off.

  • Educational and Cultural Perspectives

American buyers, in particular, have voiced concerns about the declining state of their education system and the overly sensitive nature of their culture, where caution is required to avoid inadvertently causing offence.

  • Load Shedding vs Power Costs

While acknowledging the presence of load shedding in South Africa, international buyers, especially from Europe, appreciate that despite power challenges, South Africa has yet to witness the tenfold increase in power costs experienced in some European countries. This factor contributes significantly to the overall cost of living considerations.

A nation of endless possibilities

Despite the myriad of challenges we face as a nation, we have countless reasons to be grateful, from the warmth of our people to the beauty of our landscapes and the richness of our culture.

As South Africans, we know the power of unity and determination. Let's be thankful for our incredible blessings and continue working together to build a brighter future for all.

In the words of Nelson Mandela, "It always seems impossible until it's done." With the resilience, unity, and gratitude that define us, there is no reason why it's too late for South Africa to achieve greatness.
