Lilian Ngoyi - The courageous activist

Lilian Ngoyi was a pioneering activist and the reason we celebrate Women's Month in August. She was the first woman elected to the African National Congress (ANC) executive committee. Born in 1911, Ngoyi began her career as a seamstress but quickly became a leading figure in the struggle against apartheid.
Her enduring leadership during the Women's March on August 9th, 1956, where 20,000 women protested the Pass laws, cemented her place in history. This significant date is why we celebrate Women's Day on August 9th yearly, to commemorate this march as an annual reminder of how far we have come as a nation.
Ngoyi also travelled extensively, building international solidarity and gathering support for the anti-apartheid cause. Despite facing imprisonment and harassment, her steadfast courage and dedication significantly impacted the fight for equality in South Africa.
Tatjana Smith - Gold medalist Olympian icon

Not since Penny Heyns has South Africa seen an athlete with the level of skill and tenacity as Tatjana Smith. Celebrated and renowned for her remarkable achievements, Tatjana's career is highlighted by four Olympic medals: two golds and two silvers, making her South Africa's most successful Olympian. Smith's dedication to swimming and incredible performances have inspired countless fans and aspiring athletes worldwide.
Her career culminated at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she claimed a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke and a silver in the 200m breaststroke. Despite narrowly missing out on retaining her 200m title, Smith's performance was a testament to her grit and determination. Her rivalry with the USA's Kate Douglass in Paris was an incredible display of athletic excellence and sportsmanship.
Ruth First - The radical Pan-African revolutionary

Ruth First was a journalist, academic, and anti-apartheid activist. Born into a politically active family, she was deeply involved in the struggle against apartheid. Her investigative journalism exposed the brutal realities of the regime at a time when state-controlled media dominated the narrative, leading to her imprisonment and later exile.
First's commitment to pan-Africanism (the concept of a unified African continent) and her radical approach to fighting for justice made her a formidable force and a name to be respected among activists and her readers. Ruth First's assassination was widely believed to have been ordered by SA Security Agencies via a parcel bomb delivered to her at Maputo University in Mozambique, where she worked during her exile. While this was a profound and tragic loss, her legacy and perceived martyrdom continue to inspire activists worldwide.
Thuli Madonsela - The tenacious advocate for justice

While South Africa has a history of powerful women who have paved the way to where we are now, modern stalwarts such as Thuli Madonsela continue to showcase the prominence of activism in our modern society. Madonsela is a renowned lawyer, professor, and former Public Protector of South Africa. Known for her cheek and tenacity, Madonsela is staunchly committed to justice. She was pivotal in exposing corruption and maladministration within the government.
Madonsela's work on the State Capture report was instrumental in holding influential figures accountable while promoting a more transparent government. Her dedication to upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights has earned her the title of respected figure in South Africa and beyond.
