High-tech security tips for when you're away on holiday

Category News

Going away for the holidays after a busy year is always a joyous occasion, especially after these uncertain lockdown levels.

Although we've experienced what was known as the "crime holiday" during the lockdown periods of 2020, 2021 is definitely showing a trend towards increased numbers. A recent SASSA report for 2021 concluded that we're still on a 19% downward trend from 2019. However, this is below 2020 and statisticians warn that as lockdown decreases, crime levels will spike once more.

This is especially true as we start opening up again with more people taking the opportunity to leave their homes during this festive season. That being said, now may be a good time for you to update your security system with the latest features for peace of mind while you're away.

Security lighting is essential

When it comes to major deterrents, beyond having a pack of trained German Shepherd Dogs, lighting is perhaps one of the most important considerations. Consider using floodlights placed at optimal locations (namely entrance ways) around your property to ensure that your home exterior lights up like a Roman Candle. Solar motion sensors? We need to be energy efficient

When it comes to interior lighting, consider leaving tableside lamps on during your trip to illuminate spaces like your patio and outdoor decks. Sometimes, one of the best deterrents is motion sensor lights that immediately illuminate your surroundings at the drop of a hat. Most opportunists will turn tail and run the moment the spotlight is on them.

Advanced alarm systems and mechanisms

As mentioned above, burglars and home invaders search for the easiest target with the best return. Installing a high-quality alarm system will not only alert your security company in cases of emergency but home security systems for desirable properties usually encompass an amalgamation of alarm, camera, and access control systems.

When it comes to secure locking mechanisms that provide physical barriers to entry, consider the following advice. Contact a reputable locksmith to review your current system and make suggestions on where you should improve upon the most. They will ensure that installed locks fit snuggly, are still in working order, and that they continue to conform to the latest South African security regulatory standards.

CCTV and access control

CCTV, alarms and even segmented access is a standard set for high-end property and is encapsulated within a home security system. Camera's, concealed and visible, systems can be set up to view and record major throughways and entrance points to your property. They allow you to keep track of suspicious activity and prevent planned break-ins.

If you're away from home for an extended period of time then a doorbell camera is an extremely useful tool. If someone rings your front door, the system will immediately video call you and show you a live feed of who is standing outside. Some systems (Like ring.za) even have a speaker that allows you to communicate with them directly.

Multi-Layered approach

For larger properties with wide-stretching gardens, sometimes the best approach is to create multiple barriers of entry before reaching the front door. The more physical deterrents involved the better.

A multilayered approach also refers to your security overlay. Physical barriers and cameras are tangible components, but the depth of your security system also includes software such as firewalls and back-end anti-intrusion systems. Cyber attacks on your CCTV and Access Control by criminals intent on getting in can shut down your security grid in a second. One needs to consider their defensive depth as well.

Tips on making your home appear occupied while on holiday

You may have all the security features under the sun, but some of the best ways to keep people out of your property are to make your home appear "lived in." Set your lights, TVs, and radios on timers and have them periodically switch on and off to leave the appearance that someone is currently home and about.

Be careful with your social media posts, rather keep the news that you're going away to yourself and a select group of trusted friends or family. Make sure not to post any specific dates when you're going away and refrain from posting any pictures or videos until you are back home. The less that people know of your movements, the harder it is for them to plan ill-gotten deeds around them.

Consider hiring a trusted member of your friendship circle to come in and look after the house for the duration of the holiday. House sitting is also an awesome way for older teens or young adults to make a little extra money on the side. If they're trustworthy, respectful, and consistent with updates, their presence in the house will grant you peace of mind.
