Golfing at its finest - Silver Lakes, Garden Route, Atlantic Seaboard

Category News

We know golfing far surpasses any other outdoor activity! Although, secretly, we'll admit that it's entirely down to preference.

Beyond setting the stage for hours of fun with friends in the gorgeous countryside, golf is the best sport for breaking the ice with fellow executives. Beyond this, golf teaches players a modicum of good sportsmanship and respect for each other. It fosters the growth of lifelong friendships and may even initiate the close of important business deals.

Without further ado, we look at a few sterling courses throughout the country should you ever find yourself meandering through the provinces.

Silver Lakes Golf Estate

Located within the violet-coloured suburbs of Pretoria East and one of the largest residential golfing estates in the country, Silver Lakes Golf Estate is perhaps one of the most prestigious greens in the world. Awarded golf's highest sustainability accolade in 2016, Silver Lakes is a relatively new course built in 1993 by Zimbabwean Peter Matkovich and his esteemed business partner, Dale Hayes.

Built upon modified terrain, the years of reconstruction of the natural scenery played to benefit the environment in which it is located. Not only does it host a reserve of wildlife endemic to the region, but it is also one of South Africa's premium luxury lifestyle estates. The club is also known for hosting the 2015 Amateur Golf Championship, which complemented its status as a seasoned and well-established course.

Knysna's Favourite Golf Course

Founded over a century ago in 1909, The Knysna Golf Club is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious greens. Known for its friendly and laid-back atmosphere, it is frequented by visitors worldwide.

With an 18-hole golf course that stretches across an amalgamation of tidal pools and magnificent indigenous flora, its tempting topiary terrain offers visitors easy and laid-back walks without needing a golf cart. Although they are, of course, on offer as rentals. Yet don't let its soft complexion fool you. The course is a challenge. Offering long Par-5s, imposing par-3s, and incredibly challenging par-4s making it both a thought-provoking and enjoyable affair.

The Royal Port Alfred Golf Club

Located just a few kilometres north of Kenton on Sea in the town of Port Alfred is the grand Royal Golf Club, named after the town it finds its home in. With spectacular sea views of the Wild Coast, the Royal Port Alfred Golf Course boasts a unique and undulating experience.

While the course is relatively small, it offers incredible views of its surroundings, especially at the Greenmantle, where views of the gorgeous scenery make any day, windy or calm, a joyous occasion. The course itself snakes through thickets of pristine coastal forests and across greens of hilly dunes. Indeed, there is something to be said about the salty aroma of the Indian Ocean as players slowly meander across the greens to the backdrop of crashing waves.

The Metropolitan Golf Club

Cross two oceans, and towards the Atlantic Seaboard of the city of Cape Town lies one of Western Cape's best-kept secrets. At least, in theory. Known as South Africa's premier Golf Course, The Metropolitan Golf Club promises adventure and immaculate greens and is the birthplace of lifetime friendships.

Since its creation in 1895, the Metropolitan, or MET, has been described by residents of Cape Town as the jewel of the city. With 18 holes, each with separate tees, 14 world-class greens and nine exceptional fairways, there is perhaps no course more refined than this. The true role provided by the MEt is described by many as the one which sets the bar above all else.
