The craft behind the sparkling wines

Something is enchanting about sipping on a glass of sparkling wine, with its mousseux bubbles and celebratory feel. Each year, the festival offers the chance to sample some of your favourite brands and understand the craft behind them.

Sparkling wines are created through two primary methods: the traditional method, also known as the Champagne method or méthode champenoise, and the innovative sparged method.
The traditional method is renowned for its quality and complexity. Only sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France can be called "champagne", but in South Africa, wine made using the same method is termed Cap Classique.

This method involves a meticulous grape harvesting, fermentation, and aging process, resulting in the exceptional Deed Cap Classique Brut. On the other hand, the sparged method used for producing the famous Babelki-a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir-is a more modern approach that allows for a quicker production while maintaining a deliciously bubbly finish.

The vineyards and winemakers

Franschhoek's vineyards are home to some of the finest winemakers in the Western Cape-passionate artisans crafting wines that reflect the region's unique terroir. The festival provides a platform for these winemakers to showcase their craftsmanship and share the stories behind their creations.

From the historic tale of Deed Cap Classique Brut to the community-supported Bąbelki Sparkling Rosé Brut, each bottle tells a story of passion, heritage, and innovation.
