Whether you are looking to buy a new home or you are looking to redesign your current home interior, researching your options for interior design and finding the right one for you is a crucial step in the process. At Hamilton's Property Portfolio, we recognise the work and efforts of South Africa's leading interior designers and the work they do in creating truly beautiful and functional homes. This month we are proud to introduce Mariano Rossouw as one of the brilliant interior designer on our radar for June.

Q&A with Mariano Rossouw

Hamilton's: How long have you been an interior designer?

Mariano Rossouw: We officially started Mariano Rossouw in 2012 after graduating in KLC school of design in London, so seven years.

Hamilton's: Where do you get ideas and inspiration for new designs?

Mariano Rossouw: Inspiration is everywhere around us really... in nature, art, philosophy, astrology, historical periods, places, trends, brands, movies, music, video games, other designs, or just a simple object that the client possesses and values. The only limit is your imagination! The client's history and personality always invest a great role of inspiration for new designs.

Hamilton's: What are the latest trends in interior design?

Mariano Rossouw:

Echo chic

Unusual marbles

Maximalism

Curved furniture

Floral patterns

Bold happy colours

Textured surfaces

Indirect lighting

Wallpapers

Wovens

Organic forms

Generally, when it comes to residential, it feels like there's a return to a more homey, nostalgic environment as opposed to the stark minimalism that prevailed in the 2000s.

Whilst we like to keep updated on trends, we love to design spaces that are functional, relevant, aesthetically pleasing and timeless.

Hamilton's: Which do you consider more important: functionality or aestheticism?

Mariano Rossouw: In a successful interior, functionality and aesthetics will be directly proportional. If one of them is less or missing, then you have done something wrong!

Hamilton's: Walk me through your design process. Where do you start?

Mariano Rossouw:

We start from the brief. We meet the client and listen carefully to their wishes and requirements.

We then analyse their personality and history and look at other factors like the style of the building, orientation, location and budget, and establish what's required vs what's possible.

We then try to extract all this info and create a suitable concept that will translate into all the different elements of the project: space layout, traffic flow, lighting, textures, materials, fittings, joinery, furniture, and then down to how it's styled. This lets us create a coherent design language that will be functional, practical, durable, aesthetically pleasing and most of all, will reflect the client specific personality and history.

Following this, the practical and technical details are dealt with, which involves sourcing of materials and FF&E (furnishing, fittings and extras) within the budget parameters, as well as execution of all technical plans, visual representations (3D CAD models and renders) materials.

We then procure suitable contractors to execute the resolved design according to plan, using selected materials, finalised budgets and timelines are agreed upon.

Project management and execution forms a crucial part of the design process, making sure the design intent of a project is delivered accurately and to the highest possible standard.

On completion of a project, all snagging and quality control issues are dealt with and resolved before handing over the project to the client.

Whilst we have our favourite styles, we can execute a wide range of different styles. From Baroque to rustic or minimal and also mix different styles, because the project is always about the client.

For us it's not which style is important, but how well and seamlessly you execute it.
