CEO Update - Loving your home and all it contains

Category News

If the various stages of Lockdown have taught me anything over the past year, it is that life can be wildly unpredictable. There is an old Yiddish adage: "Mann Tracht, Un Gott Lacht" meaning "Man Plans, and God Laughs", which feels particularly apt for these Covid-times. Not that this stops us planning anything, of course. I think it is in our nature as humans to look ahead and plan, especially when the current climate is a tough one to navigate.

Lockdown has brought us face to face with our lives in the most unexpected ways. Over the past (almost) year, many of us have spent more time at home than we ever have before. Spaces, colours, shapes, furniture, fittings, décor, home maintenance have all been seen up close and personal for the first time. Suddenly, the things you keep meaning to do and never find time for can no longer be ignored. You can only be confronted with something so many times before you really need to dig deep and deal with it. Cue the DIY enthusiast in all of us - whether we literally do it ourselves, or whether we outsource the schlep - and suddenly ticking items off lists feels really satisfying. And our homes start looking better for it.

So, where is the best place to focus our energy, while ensuring the best return on investment? Kitchens and bathrooms date on average every 10 years, making these a logical first stop. For a quick update, you could give the walls a fresh coat of paint, consider new flooring options, different cupboard doors or even just replace the handles. Review your storage areas in these multipurpose rooms everyone uses and think about what you could do differently. Inspiration abounds on Pinterest, Instagram, and numerous TV shows with their before and after "reveals". I do not believe you need to spend a fortune to fundamentally change how these rooms look and feel, while adding value to your home, your investment, and your lifestyle.

I believe our homes play a huge role in how we feel about life in general, even more so when we are using them as a base from which to work. If they feel like a haven - and this will look quite different depending on who we are - we are more likely to feel calmer and more capable of handling the stresses life throws at us. Why not use this time to turn our home environments into spaces we can fall in love with again, in which we can thrive and be our best selves.
