Cape Town - South Africa's very own Silicon Valley

Category News

There is an incredible plan coordinated by Cape Town's regional government and various proudly South African tech giants to reimagine Cape Town as the "Tech Capital of Africa."

The coalition of government and private businesses is committed to building up Cape Town's status as a cultural and technological hub. They believe this will represent and showcase the values, talents, skills, and lifestyle that makes Cape Town the iconic city it is today.

Emerging SA tech markets

Many of South Africa's tech giants are primarily based in Cape Town and the Stellenbosch region. The City of Cape Town, in particular, is now ranked among the world's top 100 emerging start-up ecosystems. This is all thanks to what has been classified as a world-class digital environment where talent and resources merge with social and commercial opportunities.

Digital growth and technological innovation remain one of the region's competitive advantages, attracting investment from international and local interest groups. This essentially places Cape Town in the position of deriving a service-based economy through growing outward trade and exporting products and vital knowledge in tech.

Adapting to the pandemic

The tech sector has also played a crucial role in assisting businesses and SMMEs to adapt to new working methods and employee integration during the Covid-19 pandemic. Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, heralds the growth of Silicon Valley-esque start-ups as essential to their pandemic recovery plan.

"We are excited to proudly declare Cape Town and the Western Cape as Africa's tech capital. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us just how important this new digital economy is, and it bodes well for our province's recovery plan that we are leading in this space," says the Premier.

Government and private sector collaborations

The initial push for such an initiative was driven by the digital economy unit of the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism. In collaboration with Wesgro and various other ecosystem stakeholders such as Silicon Cape, Startup Bootcamp, LaunchLab, and Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative (CiTi), the region has called upon Western Cape residents to join in with this collective to enhance and expand upon Cape Town's position as Africa's Tech Giant, whether it is through sharing and voicing one's concerns to their broader friends group or visiting these sites to learn more about each company's contribution.

In conclusion, If there was ever a time to affirm our status as the leader of the African tech ecosystem, then no time is better than the present. The infrastructure, insight, resources, and innovation are at our fingertips. As such, the need to declare ourselves on an international stage is now.
